12/31/72 - no doubt;

'72 is my favorite grateful dead year, and this show, to me, sums up the scope of the year, both emotionally and musically. there are countless grateful dead shows that when you listen to them, convey a feeling that lets you, the faithful listener, know that something special went down inside that venue, and this show is one of them...

it's all about the 2nd set, "truckin'->other one->morning dew" - close to an hour altogether, and so drencehed with beautiful grateful dead floaty, intense psychedelia; it is definitely the best truckin'->other one(imho), yes better than dp 23, and 9/28/72; in fact, it crazy to say that it's the best grateful dea jam ever...

12/31/81 - swiggety sweet; 2nd set - ken kesey "gong bong" -> iko-iko-> (SICK, SICK, SICK)PLAYIN'->TERRAPIN'; later sick, rolling "morning dew" (best of the 80's???)

Can't see this thread going on too long, too much consensus.

'72 is the best and '76 probably second. '84 was the best I attended.

12-31-1972 certainly has the best peak jams, 12-31-1981 gives you the 4 set marathon, 12-31-84 has that great Shakedown, 12-31-1990 with branford and a monster NFA...my favorite NYE show overall is 12-31-1978
